All articles

Calgary's freeze-thaw cycles and chinooks mean meltwater can arrive quickly. Storm drains blocked by winter debris can't keep up, and water ends up pooling against foundations or across parking lots.

Clear grates and catch basins

Remove ice, gravel and leaves from grates. For larger sites, schedule catch basin cleaning before the main melt.

Check downspouts and weeping tile

Make sure downspouts discharge away from the house and that extensions are in place. Slow sump pits can indicate weeping tile issues.

Plan for the fall too

A second cleaning after leaves drop keeps the system ready for winter and reduces the work needed in spring.
